Dive Lights and Torches
Underwater torches are vital when diving in low visibility, at depth or when cave diving. As you descend below the water's surface, your surroundings become darker. A diving torch allows you to see exactly what lies ahead of you AND adds the colour back that gets filtered out as sunlight is reduced. It can also be used as a tool of communication.
Torches are essential in low light areas such as caves and on night dives but we strongly recommend you take a torch along with you on every dive to enhance the experience. Shine it into a nook or overhang to see otherwise hidden marine life and to bring colours of fish and corals alive! Most people carry a primary and a backup torch. See the categories below to help choose the right torch for you.
- Primary torches: Primary torches are usually larger, higher power torches with longer burn times. A number of primary torches are umbilical, meaning attached by a cord. These torches are popular amongst cave and technical divers because they are powerful and designed to be streamlined. They are carried as a primary light source. The cannister can be mounted to a harness or at the back of your scuba tanks. Whilst most umbilicals offer the best burn time, recent improvements in both batteries and LEDs means that a number of newer primary torches don't need an additional battery whilst still being compact enough to be mounted on a Goodman handle which can be conveniently “clipped off” when not in use. They are fitted with bright LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes) which have a long life span and are very powerful, burning for hours at full power. Here at Mike's we have a selection of high-quality primary lights from top brands like Apeks, FINNSUB, Light and Motion and Metalsub.
- Backup torches: Compact and low profile, a backup torch is your secondary source of illumination, in the event that your primary light were to fail. However, again, due to improvements in technology, many smaller backup style lights will be more than adequate as the main torch for a recreational diver. They can neatly slide into your BCD/drysuit pocket or be clipped to a D-ring for quick location in an emergency. They often have an easy grip handle, an adjustable beam and are simple to operate. A backup torch should still be powerful enough for the remainder of the dive and for effective signalling in a buddy team. They are an essential piece of equipment that will not bust your piggy bank! We have a great selection of backup torches at Mike’s from top brands like Apeks, Mares, Tovatec and Hollis.
We strongly recommend a rechargeable torch. They may be more expensive than conventional battery torches but are more economical in the long run. Many come with convenient USB charging cables. The Light and Motion, Apeks and Metalsub ranges can be charged without even opening the torch, eliminating risk of a flood.
