Review for Suunto Ocean Dive Computer by Annabel Maclennan
I’ve owned several Suunto dive computers over the years (over more than 20 years) so it’s safe to say I like them, but now that I only recreational dive on holiday the computer comes out for the trip than goes back in the drawer. In between times I use a sports watch/fitness tracker, so I was really excited to get the chance to try out the new Suunto Ocean Dive Computer which combines both. It makes so much sense to have a multi use unit these days, I don’t want to have to swap between and have an expensive computer sit in a box.
Stylish and Comfortable Design
First of all they look great. We had two Suunto Oceans to try, I took the Sand option straight away and left my husband and 18 year old son to fight over the Black version (son won). I was surprised how light weight they are on your wrist, making them very comfortable for wearing all day.
Easy Setup and Customization
It was really easy to set up the unit and download the
Suunto app. You are able to set it for your personal specifications. There is also the option in settings to get call etc. notifications from your phone, but my personal preference was to turn these off. There are lots of different setting options and it covers a huge range of sports and activities.
Exceptional Performance Underwater
As a dive computer I particularly loved the bright, coloured display underwater. It’s a big display, really clear and easy to read. It was easy to set for air or nitrox and set to dive mode. We were using a couple of older Suunto computers between the whole family and took turns with the Ocean, all agreed it was by far the clearest underwater. As all Suunto’s it’s very conservative and does like to beep at you but I like that, especially when I’m diving with my kids.
Innovative Features and Convenience
A great feature is the dive profile on the app following the dive, 3D depth and route were a useful way to visualise the dive site and our profiles.
Another huge bonus for me is that it’s rechargeable. We had another older computers battery die on our trip and we struggled to get it replaced. With these I could charge when I needed but I only had to recharge once on a 2 week trip, without diverting mode the battery lasts even longer. The only thing I would improve would be the charging connection, it doesn’t really hold the unit in place so it can move off the connected if moved slightly.
A Worthwhile Investment
All in all we loved them, so much so we have decided to buy them after the initial loan. It’s completely replaced my fitness tracker as it does all the same stuff, heart rate, sleep pattern etc. plus a whole lot more.
